This baking cookbook guides parents in how to include their kids in baking, helping kids develop not only their baking and cooking talents, but also enhance their basic yet important arithmetic, vocabulary, as well as social skills.

It is also filled with easy to follow recipes, guidelines, and tips to make baking a magical experience for the whole family to enjoy.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The Maya Kitchen Culinary Arts Center started out as the Maya Bakeshop in 1964, in the Flour Mill in Mandaluyong. At a time when baking was not yet as flourishing as it is now, Maya spearheaded the baking classes they would be known for with a team of experts. These classes aim to equip its students with everything they need to know in running their very own bakeshops: recipes, baking techniques, design, ingredient sourcing, supply management, and financing. These classes were held not only in Metro Manila but also in other provinces such as Baguio, Laguna, Pampanga, Pangasinan, and Tarlac. From these baking classes graduated the owners of some of the most popular bakeshops to date—Goldilocks Bakeshop, Hizon’s Cakes and Pastries, Rolling Pin Bakeshop, and Joni’s Bakeshop, among others.

Through the televised cooking competition, The Great Maya Cookfest (1976-1990), then hosted by Philippine culinary icon Nora Daza, Maya had introduced to the Philippine culinary scene Chef Jessie Sincioco, president and CEO of JCS Gastronomie, Inc., the company behind the successful Chef Jessie Restaurants line, and official chef for Pope Francis’s Apostolic Visit to the Philippines in January 2015. Chef Jessie bagged the grand prize for the contest’s Baking Category in 1983.

It was in the 1980s that the Maya Bakeshop transferred to its current place in Arnaiz Avenue, Makati City, and became The Maya Kitchen as it is widely known today.

Not only does Maya Kitchen train future bakers, cooks, and restaurateurs face-to-face, they also reach out to a wider audience through their cookbooks, culinary references, as well as coffee table books. Maya has already had 36 books (and counting) under their belt, three of them winners of the prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook Award: Food Service and Catering Management (Anvil, 2004), The Maya Kitchen Journal for Cooks and Foodies (Anvil, 2012), and 30-Minute Express Cooking (Anvil, 2013).

Nicomedes Márquez Joaquín, popularly known as Nick Joaquin, was a Filipino poet, novelist, playwright, essayist, historian, journalist, and the National Artist of the Philippines for Literature. He was born on May 4, 1917. After Jose Rizal and Claro M. Recto, he is considered the third most important Filipino writer.

Nick started as a proofreader at the Philippines Free Press. Later, he was promoted to contributing editor and essayist, and started writing under his equally famous pen name Quijano de Manila (Manila Old-Timer). However, it was in 1934 when he started writing short stories, poems, and essays. His experiment with fiction was noticed and hailed by Jose García Villa. Most of his works were published in Philippine magazines although some of them were published in foreign journals and magazines.

Some of Nick’s major works are Culture and History (2004); Reportage on Lovers: A Medley of Factual Romances, Happy or Tragical, Most of Which Made News (2009); Reportage on the Marcoses (2013); and Gotita de Dragon and other Stories (2014), all published by Anvil Publishing, Inc.

Reportage on Politics by Quijano de Manila

reportage on politicsReportage on Politics is a compilation of Nick’s previously published articles in dailies about the goings-on in Philippine politics from 1961 to 1970 written under the pen name Quijano de Manila.

Whether you dig politics or not, you’ll find this political album entertaining because it’s chockfull of narrative, profiles, real-life dramas, observations of our society, studies of our culture. And what a nostalgia trip, too, for many of today’s readers.

Remember when ancient Amang Rodriguez dyed his locks black? Remember those naughty jokes on Roger de la Rosa’s “untimely withdrawal”? Remember the Macapagal-Marcos battle of biographies? Remember the party conventions when B-girls shared the limelight with NP and LP, and political life indeed was a cabaret, old chum?

In this book, the bad old days live again. Here’s a wealth of detail for the biographer, a wealth of material for the historian. And for the common reader, a wealth of good old dirty fun.

Reportage on the Marcoses by Quijano de Manila

reportage on the marcoses

“And as Filipinos acquire a feeling of pride for what is theirs, for what they are, they will become more eager to surround themselves with order and cleanliness, to walk in beauty, to live, move and have their being in a just society. Culture and art and a taste for the beautiful must all lead to goodness.

“As the president said, the government is like building a house. And he told me he would build the structure, I was to take care of the refinements, the trimmings, the details . . .”

— Imelda Marcos

Quijano de Manila’s Reportage on the Marcoses features essays on the lives of Imelda and former President Ferdinand Marcos covering his political career and their courtship from 1964 to 1970.

This collection of articles were based on Quijano’s—Nick Joaquin—extensive interviews with the presidential couple back in the ’60s. It was then compiled and published as a book in 1979 by National Book Store and was reprinted in 1981. Anvil Publishing, Inc. reissued it in 2013 after rereleasing Nick’s other notable titles in the reportage series: Reportage on Crime (2009), Reportage on Lovers (2009), and Reportage on Politics (2013).

Penned in the ’60s, the essays in this book give readers glimpses of the former president’s political and love life in the good old days. Quijano’s early writings on the Marcos couple might serve as useful lessons for the next generation. Above all, Reportage on the Marcoses reminds us all of the standing of the Philippine politics—show business.

8 Tips on How to Read More Books in 2018

Whether you’ve just begun to realize that you haven’t been reading enough books, or you’ve continuously set a reading goal year after year only to realize at the end that you’ve completely forgotten them, these 8 tips will help you kickstart that reading resolution!

  1. Start a Reading ChallengeIt helps to have a goal in mind. Set how many books you want to read for the year, and then, decide how many you’ll read for each month. For example, 24 books means you’ll have to read at least two books a month.Write a list of books that you want to read and set a reminder every day when it’s time to read the book. There are websites, like Goodreads, that help track reading challenges too.
  2. Set a Dedicated Reading Time
Consistency is key. Spend at least 30 minutes to one hour a day reading a book. It can be before you sleep, or during your lunch break. Just make sure to set a reminder on your phone, and make sure to follow it!
  3.  Always Carry a Book with You
Whenever you go out, make sure you have at least a book with you. Trust me, you’re going to need it in emergency situations, like when you’re stuck in traffic or when you’re waiting for a friend who’s taking forever. Alternately, you can also buy an e-book so you can have it on your phone or kindle!
  4. Limit your Time on Social Media
Time passes by quickly when we’re endlessly scrolling on our newsfeeds, watching Facebook videos and sharing memes, before we realize that hours have already gone by. Imagine if you’ve used these hours for reading instead, you’ve probably finished a chapter or two!
  5. Explore New Genres
Have you always been a romance reader or have you always been a fan of crime books? Get out of your comfort zone and expand your horizons by exploring other genres! There are plenty of great books that you might be missing out by sticking to only one genre. You’ll never know, you might even meet your next favorite book. Some brave picks would be Shakira Sison and Ian Casocot’s Don’t Tell Anyone and Ambeth Ocampo’s Looking Back 13: Guns of the Katipunan
  6. Listen to Audiobooks
Listening to audiobooks is not “cheating.” If you’re working 8 hours a day, it gives you time to rest your eyes while finishing your favorite book. You can also listen to audiobooks while commuting, exercising, or doing chores. It’s the best of both worlds, really!
  7. Write about the Books You’ve Read
To reflect more on the books you’ve read, you can also write or blog about them. Aside from creating a deeper understanding of each book, this will also help you develop your writing skills and critical thinking skills.
  8. Join a Book Club or Start One with Your Friends
Some of the pros of joining a book club is you get to discover more books, discuss the books you’ve read, and be more motivated in reading. Alternately, you can also get in touch with some bookworm friends of yours to exchange book recommendations and spark a literary discussion.

You don’t have a date on Valentine’s Day.

You start thinking whether the “The One” will come. You start having existential crisis at the earliest of the month. You think that no one loves you. You start spending your weekends sleeping. You ruminate. You cry . . . .

These might be the case for singles out there since Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. But whether someone’s taking you out on a date or not on the 14th, these Anvil books about contemporary love and romances can be your companions for when you want to sit curled up on the sofa, eat chocolates, and feel the romantic love—or lack thereof—this month.

Sounds like Summer by Six de los Reyes

Ahhh… young love. It’s always fun to think of escaping from the dire reality that we’re facing. For Lux Castelo, spending the entire weekend with Micah Jacinto, a boy she’s been trying to stay away from, leads her to rediscover the lost pieces of herself.

But all weekends come to an end and Lux needs to return to the dreaded reality she’s running away from. But does being brave enough to leave summer behind mean being brave enough to ask Micah to stay?
